Vision & Philosophy

Welcome! I’ve been a professional photographer for almost fifty years. Thousands of assignments for editorial, advertising and Fortune 500 accounts have taken me from Maine to Malaysia. That assignment work has enriched and underwritten my parallel, lifelong quest to seek and capture the visual magic of our world. With this website, I am excited to show my work in depth.

My philosophy is simple — work to the highest standards. Always over-deliver. Prepare diligently, get the shot, and then stay alert for unexpected opportunities and alternate solutions. Relax. Be considerate and patient. Remember that attitude is just as important as talent in producing the best work.

Please look through my galleries of commercial work if you are considering me for an assignment. I have special expertise in augmenting location conditions with my own lighting. My production style runs lean and light these days. Always, I pay careful attention to clear communication and client service, from first contact through delivery.

Biography

I was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and raised in Windsor Locks. From my very first experiences in the darkroom as a boy, I have been utterly devoted to this medium.

I graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Photojournalism in 1974. I landed in Boston and worked for Children’s Hospital Medical Center as a neuroscience photographer. I transitioned into commercial assignment photography and moved to Maine in 1977. Together with my wife, Dana Trattner, we raised two children who are now adults with wonderful lives of their own.

I love discovery through travel and have an enduring pursuit of natural and vernacular landscapes. Certain moments of light, subject and framing move me with what Edward Weston called the “flame of recognition,” when the world seems poised in the breath-hold of a moment.

My fine art work embraces the traditions of film photography and the advances of modern digital media. I’m a master printer well known for the evocative beauty of my silver and giclée prints.

Now, with our world under threat from climate change and ecological destruction — let alone war and other depredations of humanity — capturing and sharing the marvel of our world finds special urgency. Always, I strive for clarity.
